About the multitasking test

A multitasking test checks how well you share your attention between several jobs at once and stay accurate as the workload grows. Cadet pilot selections commonly use this kind of task, because flying means steering, listening, checking and deciding at the same time. This FAST-style drill is independent practice that trains the same skills; it is not the official test.

What this section trains

  • Dividing attention between several jobs
  • Scanning outside and inside the cockpit
  • Acting on radio calls
  • Mental arithmetic and reasoning under workload
  • Recalling details after a busy flight

How to improve

  1. Build a scan pattern: outside view, flying screen, puzzle screen, instruments, then back outside. Keep your eyes moving instead of staring at one screen.

  2. When a radio call names a landmark, repeat it silently once or twice. That keeps the next waypoint in mind while you work on puzzles.

  3. Click Aircraft or Waypoint only when you are sure. A click with nothing to report costs more points than a miss, so guessing does not pay.

  4. Count each burst of beeps under your breath and keep a running tally of how many bursts you have heard.

  5. Stay on Easy until you can finish a flight calmly, then move to Hard. Compare round 1 with round 2 to see how much easier a known workload feels.

Questions about this section

What is a FAST-style multitasking test?

It is a computer task where you do several jobs at the same time, such as steering, reporting what you see, solving short problems and monitoring instruments. Candidates commonly report this kind of task in airline cadet aptitude assessments. Our drill trains the same skills, but it is not a copy of any official test.

How does the FlyAptitude multitasking drill work?

You fly a 3-minute flight twice, on Easy or Hard. You keep clear of bars with the arrow keys, click Aircraft or Waypoint to report, answer quick four-option puzzles and watch the instruments. After each round, five timed recall questions ask what you saw and heard, and round 2 repeats the same flight with fresh puzzles. Allow about 12 minutes and use a laptop or desktop with headphones.

How is the multitasking drill scored?

A correct report earns 10 points, and each correct puzzle or recall answer earns 5. A missed target loses 10 points and a click with nothing to report loses 20. Scores can go below zero, so accuracy matters more than clicking fast.

How can I get better at multitasking for pilot selection?

Practise in short, regular sessions rather than one long block. Also train the single skills, such as mental arithmetic, short-term memory and quick matching. When each one needs less effort, you have more attention left for the other jobs.
